About 150 years ago:
"Black ship" led by Commodore Perry arrived in Japan, demanding a diplomatic and commerce relationship. Uemon-nosuke Masuda, was a security officer there to witness this event. During the domestic battle leading up to the Meiji regime, he was prosecuted as a leader opposing demands of the foreigners.
1932-41 Ambassador Joseph Clark Grew stationed in Japan with his wife Alice (who was a descendant of Perry). After the war, Grew initiated a scholarship fund for Japanese students in the U.S.
